Welcome to the Formation and Tactics Tutorial! Your first step is to set up your preferred formation, then place your players into that line-up and continue on to your custom screens to coach your team in various tactics and choose your free-kick takers etc. This tutorial will take you through the process step by step. 1. Setup of Basic Formation (Main Menu > Tactics) 1.1 Choose “Formation” 1.2 Edit the name and change it to your formation name or description. 1.3 Click on an existing basic formation and you will see the formation appear in the graphic to the right. Choose the formation according to the players you have in your team, in other words, don’t choose a 4-3-3 formation if you don’t have wingers. If you don’t have the players to match the formation exactly, don’t worry too much – some players can play slightly out of position without too much loss in stat % (This is where versatility comes in – read about that in our FAQ). If you want your players to match your formation exactly, then you will have to customize your formation. We will get to that later in the tutorial. 1.4 Save your formation. 2. Placing your players into position (Main Menu > Line Up) 2.1 From the drop-down menu at the top right choose your newly formed formation. 2.2 Click the “Automatic” Button. Note – leaving this button grey will leave the formation on automatic and can change players into different positions, so its better to click it again and return the button to red. 2.3 You will notice in this line-up that the team has no Left Back (LB) and no Offensive Midfielder (OM) so the system has placed similar players into those positions. A yellow number signifies the average of the player in that position has dropped slightly and will not play as well as he could have played in his natural position. If these players have a high “Versatility” stat it would not be too much problem and your team play will not be too affected. If you prefer different players to play in these positions click on the player you want to bring in from the bench or reserves and then click on the player you want out of the starting 11. They will swap positions. 2.4 Save. 3. Setting your tactics (Main Menu > Tactics) 3.1 You will be on the “Shooters” page but lets go there later. Firstly click on “Tactics”. 3.2 Enter a name for your tactic. 3.3 Slide the balls to the position you desire for this tactic. 3.3.1 Effort: This is clearly how much effort the players will put into the game (run faster, tackle better, pass better etc). If you click the “i” button during your simulation you will see a green bar over the players. If your players start the game with 99 stamina, the bar will be fully green. If you play with 100% effort, you will have very tired players for the last 20 mins and you could lose the game because of it. Also you will have used roughly 20 of your players stamina points so he could well be down to 79 stamina after one game! If you set up multiple tactics with different efforts, you can use them in “Advanced Tactics”. 3.3.2 Defence: Zonal Marking vs Man Marking. Man marking is less risky as there is less likelihood of an opposition attacker finding large amounts of space. This may be a good option for a new manager or playing a strong attacking opposition. The drawback of man marking is it can pull your defenders way out of position and tire them out. Zonal marking will keep your defence in a better shape and is probably employed by more experienced managers that have quicker defenders. The drawback of zonal marking is that there is more space for the attacking players, for example - a counter attacking long ball to a CF can leave him through on goal. Somewhere in between is employed by most managers. 3.3.3 Attack: This is pretty simple, which passing style suits you? Wide play with full backs and wingers or strong central midfielders. 3.3.4 Play: Short Passes vs Counterattack (Long passes) – short passes will ensure higher possession and a lower risk of losing the ball to the opposition. Long passes used in counterattack situations can be very effective to wide players or central strikers and can nick you a quick goal. However there is a much higher risk of losing the ball in a 50/50 situation. Counterattack can be employed by teams playing stronger opposition in conjunction with other tactics. 3.4 These are your lines of Defence, Midfield and Attack – they define how advanced (forward) or how deep (back) you want these players. Positioning of these lines can be critical to your performance. In the above example the defence is set forward to play for offside, hoping the quick defenders will be able to cover any attack. The midfield is set slightly back to aid in defence and maintaining ball possession. The attack is set quite far forward so the slow CF can get behind the defence with a through ball from the OM especially if your opponent plays with a deep defence. 3.5 Save *Note: Multiple tactics can be set up depending on your style of play and formation of your own team as well as the opponent. These can then be implemented during the game and will be covered in more detail in the Advanced Tactics tutorial. 4. Setting your Shooters (Main Menu > Tactics) 4.1 Click on the “Shooters” tab. 4.2 You will see drop down menu’s for your Free Kick Taker (Fouls), Corner Taker, Penalty Taker and Captain. Choose which player you would like for each option, bearing in mind for example you may want your free kick taker to be a midfielder (even though he may have a lesser rating) so that your attackers can be further up field. 4.3 Check to ensure your formation and tactics previously set up are active. 4.4 Send (save). 5. Setting an Advanced Formation (Main Menu > Tactics) 5.1 Click on the “Formation” tab. 5.2 Click on “Advanced”. You will notice now if you click on the football on the field and move it around, the players move around the field in their formation. 5.3 Give your formation a name and it may be wise to save at this point. 5.4 Do NOT use the Copy Formation utility. Leave the default formation as it is. Hopefully when the bugs in the game are fixed you will be able to copy a similar formation to the one you would like to customize. 5.5 Leaving the football in the middle of the pitch, move the players into your starting formation. In the example above, the team prefers to play with a DFM as apposed to an IM so the IM player is moved down to a DFM position. *Note: This player is not an IM playing out of position – this is a DFM player starting in his natural position now. Also the manager prefers in this case to start his wide midfielders in a more advanced position. 5.6 Your starting formation is now set up; it may be wise to save once again. 5.7 Your next step is important to complete your advanced formation. As you move the ball around the field, you will notice the players you moved go back to their previous positions. This clearly will cause chaos during the game so we need to set up the player’s positions for each of the 35 squares of the pitch. Start by moving the football just one square to the right of centre. In the above example, the manager would once again bring down the DFM back to a suitable position and take his 2 wide midfielders forward again. Keep going for each block (patience is required) until you are satisfied all your players are in the position you want them in each square of the pitch. Click on the football and move it around the field – all your players should be flowing freely around the field without any sudden drastic moves. 5.8 Save! Save! Save! 5.9 Well Done! If you have got to this point, congratulations on your patience in setting up your advanced formation. 5.10 Don’t forget to activate this formation if you are ready to use it in a game. Stay tuned for our next Tutorial: "Advanced tactics" coming as soon as the major bugs have been fixed Happy Gaming! |
