Welcome to the formation tutorial!

This tutorial will show you the principles you need to know to create customized formations using the full version of the site. Screenshots are provided at the end.

Please note!

It is not possible to create an advanced formation using the mobile version of the site.

This tutorial will not show you how to create a whole formation (you must use the principles here to do this for yourself)!

It is also important to note there is no such thing as “the best formation”. The optimal setup will vary depending on your own setup, strengths and weaknesses and those of your opponent.

ADVICE

Before you start, you should make a choice of how many defenders, midfielders and forwards you would like in your starting lineup. FYI - while of course you can only have 10 outfield players plus 1 goalkeeper, the game sets a maximum for each position:

Goalkeeper (GK) - 1
Defenders (LB, LDF, CDF, RDF, RB) - 5
Midfielders (DFM, LM, LIM, IM, RIM, RM, OM) - 5
Forwards (LW, LF, CF, RF, RW) - 3

In addition, you can only have 2 of any one single position (e.g. while you can have up to 5 midfielders starting in their natural positions, you can have maximum 2 IMs). The exception here is the goalkeeper - you can only have one GK in their natural starting position! You can play, for example, 3 IMs as long as at least one of them is not in his natural starting position (so, for example, you could play the IM in a RM position).

You should generally choose your lineup according to the players you have in your team. In other words, don’t choose a 4-3-3 formation if you don’t have good wide forwards or wingers. If you don’t have the players to match the formation exactly, don’t worry too much – some players can play slightly out of position without too much loss in stat % (This is where versatility comes in – read about that in our FAQ). However, the beauty of the advanced formation is you can make small modifications to allow your best players to play in their correct natural starting position.

TUTORIAL

Now head to the formation page: (SCREENSHOT 0.1)(SCREENSHOT 0.2)
http://en.strikermanager.com/formacion2.php

1) Under “CURRENT FORMATIONS” select a new formation, name it and click “Save”. You have now created the basis of a new formation. (SCREENSHOT 1)

Underneath the “CURRENT FORMATIONS” box you can see a similar box named “COPY FORMATION”. Here you can see 14 preset formations suggesting how you will arrange your defense-midfield-forward lines. These formations are known as BASIC FORMATIONS, and they are generally terrible if you want to progress in the game. However, you must use one of these as your starting point.

2) Based on your preferred starting lineup, select one of these basic formations as the starting point for your advanced formation.(SCREENSHOT 2)

For this example I will use 3-5-2 C.

3) Now click “Save”. (SCREENSHOT 3.1)

Your new formation will now be set up with 3 defenders, 5 midfielders and 2 forwards like shown on the pitch diagram on the right. (SCREENSHOT 3.2)

You will notice in the top-right corner of the pitch diagram, there are two options - “Basic” and “Advanced”. Basic is set by default.

You will also notice that the pitch appears to be in a checkerboard pattern. This is very important!

4) Click “Advanced”. (SCREENSHOT 4)

5) Click “Save” again. (SCREENSHOT 5.1)

You will now see that a football icon has appeared in the middle of your pitch (SCREENSHOT 5.2). Notice that when you move the football icon around the players move too.

Congratulations! This is the foundation of an ADVANCED FORMATION, but there is much more work to do.

When you drop the football into any square on the chequerboard pitch pattern, you will see little yellow triangles/arrows next to the football (SCREENSHOT 5.3). Ignore these for now.

The football icon indicates that when (in your match) the match football is in that part of the pitch, your players will position themselves exactly where they are shown (ignoring for now any tactics you may have in place).

6) Now it is time to set your lineup positions. While the football icon is in the center circle, drag each player until they are positioned where you want them to stand as your starting lineup.

Below each player you can see the position that player currently has at kick-off. Let’s imagine you want to start a LDF rather than the default LB. You drag the LB inwards until it shows as being a LDF. *Note: This player is not a LB playing out of position – this is now a LDF starting in his natural position. I also want to do the same with my RB>RDF position. (SCREENSHOT 6). Complete this process until you are happy with your starting setup.

7) Click “Save”. (SCREENSHOT 7)

8) Now go to your lineup: (SCREENSHOT 8.1)
http://en.strikermanager.com/alineacion.php

Above the pitch image on the right side you will see a drop-down menu arrow next to the name of the preset formation or formation currently in use. (SCREENSHOT 8.2)

9) From the drop-down menu, select the name of your new formation. (SCREENSHOT 9.1)

You will see the formation on the pitch image has now changed to your new formation. (SCREENSHOT 9.2)

10) Now arrange your lineup so it fits this new formation as it will likely be scrambled. To switch players from the starting lineup, click on the players one after the the other, remembering to check the SUBSTITUTES and RESERVES if you cannot find your star players.

You know all players are in the correct positions if their average “AV.” is green (SCREENSHOT 10). If the AV is yellow or red, this means the average of the player in that position has dropped slightly and he will not play as well as he would in his natural position. If these players have a high “Versatility” stat it would not be too much of a problem and your team play will not be too affected.

If you need to start a player of another position you can edit the advanced formation lineup by repeating step 5 again.

11) When you are finished, click “Save”. (SCREENSHOT 11)

12) Return to the formation page: (SCREENSHOT 12.1)
http://en.strikermanager.com/formacion2.php

Remember the pitch image on the formation page is in that checkerboard pattern? Let’s give each column a letter (A-E) and each row a number (1-7). (SCREENSHOT 12.2)

13) The center circle is now in square C4. The corners are in cells A1, E1, A7 and E7.

This step requires patience but it is probably the most important step in Striker Manager! Move the football icon from square to square, positioning all 10 outfield players as if the football was in that square of the pitch during the match situation. You cannot move the goalkeeper!

There are 35 squares in total - one of which (C4) is the center circle. Remember to leave the formation in the center circle as it is - this is your starting lineup!

There is no attack and defense as such in this mode, but you should consider your team is attacking when the football is in square C2, for example (SCREENSHOT 13.1) and defending when the ball is in square C6, for example (SCREENSHOT 13.2).

It is a good idea to save often!(SCREENSHOT 13.3). The football icon will return to square C4 again each time so just move it back to where you want it.

Remember those little yellow arrows next to the ball? (SCREENSHOT 13.4). Those are really useful! You can move those to quickly position all players in the same way they are when the football is in neighboring squares. Pressing the arrow below the football icon when the football is in square C5, for example, will copy all player positions from the square below - C6. In other words, if you have already edited square C6 and wish to make little or no changes to C5, move the ball to square C5 and press the arrow below the football.

When you are finished, you should be able to drag the football icon ball all around the pitch without any player making any sudden, drastic moves (except perhaps when the ball moves over the center circle or to the 4 corner squares).

14) After you have positioned the players in each of the squares, save the formation. (SCREENSHOT 14)

Well done! If you have got to this point, congratulations on your patience in setting up your advanced formation.
