Welcome to the tactics tutorial for mobile users!

This tutorial will show you the principles you need to know to create customized tactics using the mobile version of the site. Screenshots are provided at the end.

Please note, there is no such thing as “the best tactics”. The optimal setup will vary depending on your own setup, strengths and weaknesses and those of your opponent.

Now head over to the tactics page by clicking “Coach” and then “Tactics”: (SCREENSHOT 0.1 and SCREENSHOT 0.2)

You will see something that looks like this (SCREENSHOT 0.3)

In the “TACTICS REGISTERED” section, enter a name for your chosen tactic. Something that describes the setup may be useful. (SCREENSHOT 1)

You will notice you have space for 14 tactics in total. If you set up multiple tactics with different efforts, you can use them in “Advanced Tactics”

Underneath the “TACTICS REGISTERED” box you can see two boxes labelled “CAMPO” and “FEATURES” (SCREENSHOT 2.1)

Let’s start with “CAMPO”.

These fields define how forward or deep you want these types of players. Positioning of these lines can be critical to your performance.

To visualise the meaning of the numerical values used in the mobile version of the site, SCREENSHOT 2.2 shows the image of the pitch we see in the full version of the site, annotated with the numbers you must choose in the mobile version.

Def

Indicates how far forward or back your defensive line is.
You must give a value of between 70 and 100, where 70 indicates that your defense will push up as far as possible towards the midfielders, and 100 indicates they will sit back (despite the options being called “DELAYED” and “Forward”, the reality is actually opposite)!

AVE

Indicates how far forward or back your midfield line is.
You must give a value of between 25 and 75, where 25 indicates that your midfield will push up as far as possible towards the attackers, and 75 indicates they will sit back (despite the options being called “DELAYED” and “Forward”, the reality is actually opposite)!

Fwd

Indicates how far forward or back your forward line is.
You must give a value of between 0 and 30, where 0 indicates that your attackers will wait high up the field, and 30 indicates they will sit back (despite the options being called “DELAYED” and “Forward”, the reality is actually opposite)!

In the example (SCREENSHOT 2.3), the defense is set forward to play for offside, hoping the quick defenders will be able to cover any attack. The midfield is set slightly back to aid in defence and maintaining ball possession. The attack is set quite far forward so the slow CF can get behind the defence with a through ball from the OM especially if your opponent plays with a deep defence.

For best results, you will need to make this sort of analysis before each game. You can either modify a single tactic for each opponent, or save new tactics and switch between these from game to game (or even during the game, using advanced tactics).

Now let’s set up the style of play “FEATURES” (SCREENSHOT 3).

Effort

This is how much effort the players will put into the game. Select a value for the effort, where 0 is the lowest possible and 100 is the highest.

The higher the effort, the faster your players will run, the more accurate their shooting, the better (and harder) their tackles will be, the better your passing will be. However, your players will tire faster, and at the end of the game it could be your opponent’s players who experience these advantages over your players.

If you click the “i” button during your match simulation you will see a green bar over the players’ heads. If your players start the game with 99 stamina, the bar will be fully green.

If you play with 100% effort(so the football icon is all the way to the right), you will have very tired players for the last 20 mins and you could lose the game because of it. Also you will have used roughly 20 of your players stamina points so he could well be down to 79 stamina after one game!

If you play with 0% effort (so the football icon is all the way to the left), your players will be slow, shoot less accurately, tackle weakly (if at all) and pass poorly. In addition, they will also be more likely to be injured at low effort. However, at lower effort your players will preserve stamina better.

The aim is to find the correct effort level (or combination of different effort levels if you switch during the game using advanced tactics) to ensure you win the game while not exhausting your players for the next game. Remember - you should always run your physiotherapist but he cannot work miracles!

Defense

Next, you should choose whether to play more zonal marking “In zones” vs man-marking “Man-to-man”. Select a value for the defense, where 0 is the most zonal marking possible and 100 is the most man-to-man marking.

Zonal marking will keep your defence in a better shape and is probably employed by more experienced managers that have quicker defenders (relative to your opponent). The drawback of zonal marking is that there is more space for the attacking players, for example - a counter attacking long ball to the opposition CF can leave him through on goal with none of your defenders near him.

Man-marking is less risky as there is less likelihood of an opposition attacker finding large amounts of space. This may be a good option if you have relatively slow defenders or when you are playing opposition with strong attacking firepower. The drawback of man-marking is it can pull your defenders way out of position and tire them out.

Most managers will not play extremely zonal or extremely man-to-man, but will aim to find a balance somewhere in between.

Attack


This is pretty simple - which attacking style suits you (and the players you have)?

Select a value for the attack, where 0 is the most central attacking focus possible and 100 is the most wide attacking focus.

Attacking on the wings means your team will try to get the ball out wide and play through your (typically faster) full backs and wingers or wide forwards.

Attacking in the middle will focus your attacking play through your (typically stronger), more physical players through the center.

You should consider the players you have versus your opponent. For example, If you possess the advantage with quick RFs and LFs, while your opponent prefers slower, bulkier CDFs, you may find more attacking opportunities if you focus your attacks out wide. However, this will of course make you more vulnerable to your opponent’s attacks through the center if you lose possession while in attack!

Play


Will your team build up pressure by making a series of small passes, or will you try to catch your opponent off guard with a long ball over the top?

Select a value for the play, where 0 instructs your team to focus on short passes where possible) possible and 100 is the most counterattacking.

Focusing your play on short passes will ensure higher possession and a lower risk of losing the ball to the opposition. However, this style of play will be slower and more measured and may not be so effective if you need a quick goal, or if your players do not possess good passing stats.

On the other hand, you can employ long passes in counterattack situations, which can be very effective in finding wide players or central strikers and can nick you a quick goal. However there is a much higher risk of losing the ball in a 50/50 situation. Counterattack can be successfully employed by teams playing stronger opposition, in conjunction with other tactics.
