Welcome to the advanced tactics tutorial for full site users!

This tutorial will show you the principles you need to know to trigger changes in your tactics at planned points during your matches using the full version of the site. Screenshots are provided below.

One of the most common uses of advanced tactics is to order substitutions, but you can do a lot more than this, such as change tactics or formation during a game.

The game splits each advanced tactic into “Conditions”, “Actions” and “Substitutions”.

1) CONDITIONS

You can set your chosen advanced tactics to come into effect either at a defined time in the match or when the scoreline is at given points.
To make advanced tactics come into effect you must choose one of these options but of course not both in one tactic (for example, you cannot instruct a formation change to occur at 75 minutes but also when 2 goals ahead in the same tactic).

Please note: Conditions alone will do nothing and will be invalid, as conditions only say when to perform your chosen change. You need to tell the match engine what to do. Each advanced tactic must have at least one condition and at least one action or substitution to be valid. You can perform a mix of actions and substitutions under one consingle condition, but make sure to watch for conflicts and errors.

You can have a mixture of time-based and situation based tactics in a game, although it is generally not advised as it can confuse the match engine. Again, watch for conflicts (for example, if you have set your RW to be replaced at half time you of course cannot replace him again at 60 minutes)!

To select time-based conditions, click the arrow (SCREENSHOT 1.1). You will see something that looks like SCREENSHOT 1.2.
You can choose from the following game times:
Any time (This is set as default and essentially means the same as “off” for that parameter)
Beginning of the first half (usually within the first minutes of the first half)
Beginning of the second half (usually within the first minutes of the first half)
15th minute
30th minute
60th minute
75th minute

This works well for routine substitutions (e.g. when your CF is a little tired from the last game and you only want him to play 60 minutes to rest him) and for when effort used needs to be precisely controlled but of course does not take into account whether the game is going to plan in terms of scoreline.

To select situation-based conditions, click the arrow (SCREENSHOT 1.3). You will see something that looks like SCREENSHOT 1.4.

You can choose to activate your chosen changes when the score in the match is:
Any (This is set as default and essentially means the same as “off” for that parameter)
Draw
1 goal ahead
2 goals ahead
More than 2 goals lead
1 goal down
More than one goal down

This works well when you want to control a game in terms of effort used but not use more than is needed (for example taking your foot off the accelerator when 2 goals or more ahead), but does not work so well with substitutions if your aim is to precisely ensure (for example) the impact RW has enough time to exploit your opponent’s tired legs.


2) ACTIONS

For the conditions explained above, you may wish to make a change to your formation or to your tactics.

To make a change of formation at the given time/situation in the game, click the arrow (SCREENSHOT 2.1).
You’ll see a list of all default basic formations, with any formations you have added at the bottom of the list.

3) SUBSTITUTIONS

For the conditions explained above, you may wish to make a change to your on-field players.

It is first a good idea to ensure you have the players you want on the bench. Striker Manager permits 7 players on the substitutes bench. To change your substitutes, make the necessary changes using the link below. Remember to save your changes.

You will see the substitutions box is set up like in SCREENSHOT 3.1. The players in your starting lineup are on the left side (SCREENSHOT 3.2) and the players on your bench are on the right side (SCREENSHOT 3.3).

Only players in your starting lineup can be substituted off the pitch, This effectively means it is not possible to bring a player onto the pitch and then later remove the same player. You cannot save the tactic if each player listed has a counterpart coming onto the pitch or leaving it.

Unfortunately, injuries have a habit of messing up planned substitutions. Sometimes the player you wanted to substitute out later will pick up an injury and be automatically replaced by someone other than the substitute you had in mind. Other times, the incoming substitute may themselves have been part of a later player change, meaning the subsequent player change will not take place. And of course, if you have already used your 3 allowed substitutes, any subsequent injured players will not be replaced. There is not really much you can do to protect your team against the impact injuries have on your planned substitutions, so you will just need to accept it is part of the game.

You cannot, of course, substitute the same player more than once under a single condition. If you set the same player to come either on or off under the same condition you will be reminded that this is invalid.

When all advanced tactics are set for this condition, click “SEND” to save. (SCREENSHOT 4)

Add as many conditions as you like, but again be careful not to create conflicting tactics or the game engine will behave unpredictably.

You will be taken back to a screen showing all your new advanced tactics/conditions. (SCREENSHOT 5) By default, any newly-created advanced tactics are activated.

You will here be able to quickly activate, deactivate or delete individual advanced tactics before each game, depending on your wishes for the match ahead by toggling between “activate” and “deactivate”. To delete the advanced tactic, click the “delete” button. (SCREENSHOT 6)

Alternatively, you can activate/deactivate multiple advanced tactics quickly by clicking the checkmark next to the appropriate advanced tactics, then scrolling over the “SET” button to reveal more options, and clicking “ACTIVATE” or “DEACTIVATE”(SCREENSHOT 7). You will need to delete advanced tactics individually.

Congratulations! You have now set up your advanced tactics!
